Intro to Wildcamping - Cairngorms

Saturday 19th - Sunday 20th April

Slide1.png
About the event:

Where is the Experience?

Tucked away behind the main bulk of the Cairngorms is Glen Feshie. In the past few decades, Glen Feshie has undergone a rewilding transformation and is absolutely spectacular. A real throwback to days gone by as it may have appeared not long after the last ice age.

We access the higher plateau behind the Braeriach - Devil's Point ridge from here via a long and winding road down from Aviemore. It is here that we can arrive by road (the major trunkroad the A9), rail (mainline, even from London Euston) or air (from Inverness airport).

The Cairngorms, or Monadh Ruadh (the red mountains) are ancient and made up primarily of red granite. And they are huge rounded lumps. Indeed, the Cairngorms are the highest, coldest and windiest plateau in Britain with wildlife still there from the ice age. 5 of the 9 4,000ft peaks are here. The others across next to and including Ben Nevis on the west coast.

About the Experience:

This is an opportunity to experience wildcamping for those who might have not done it before, or want a few tips to regain confidence going out alone. This will be a relaxed event with the possibility to go and bag some nearby Munros, but mainly to have a night out in the wild to see what it is all about.

We'll meet and talk through what and how to pack via a zoom call in the week beforehand. We can provide a limited number of tents and stoves, but the idea is that we can get some experience in a relaxed way out in the mountains on a wildcamp. We'll only spend the one night out which may be enough for you to work out what works for you and what perhaps doesn't.

Saturday 19th April

We'll meet at Tiso in Aviemore. There is a cafe upstairs where we can meet up, have a coffee and chat through the plans. We can also check everyone has everything we need, I can hand out anything to borrow by prior arrangement, and there is a shop downstairs for any last minute stuff we've forgotten!

We'll then head down to Glen Feshie and begin the walk up to the plateau. It's a gradual ascent through stunning Caledonian pine, open moorland and then up on to the higher mountain plateau. We're not racing it so there will be plenty of time to rest and get used to a larger and heavier pack. When we have arrived, we'll find somewhere near water to set up a camp.

After a cuppa, we can head over to one of the Munros with a much lighter pack!

After a meal, if the weather is fine we can go out for a night stroll and enjoy the stars from a fully dark skies area.

Sunday 20th April

After breakfast, we'll head across to one of the other Munros, and then back to tidy up and pack away our camp. We'll wonder down to the cars and have lunch in Aviemore (optional) before heading home!

Meeting Point:

We'll meet at Tiso cafe in Aviemore at 0900 (will be confirmed with those booked nearer the time) before heading down to the parking area in Glen Feshie. To see the start points in Googlemaps, please click on the links

Difficulty:

The two days is about experiencing wildcamping in a non-pressured environment. We won't be absolutely bombing it with a huge Munro tick list. We're there to experience wild camping and get to grips with it. If we get to bag a Munro or two then great.

That said, you will need walking experience and be used to carrying a rucksack. We've chosen Glen Feshie as the ascent is (for the most part) gradual and non-threatening. If we need to we can easily walk back even in the night.

Prerequisites:

You'll need experience of walking in the Dales, Fells or Highlands but are wanting to go further afield wildcamping.

Cost:

The experience costs just £120 for the two days and night out under the stars - this will include any borrowed kit (first come first serve) too.

There are discounts for booking more than one person.

Under 18s are welcome but must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian.

Numbers:

We can take a maximum of 8 and a minimum of 4 for the day to go ahead.

Equipment:

Please see the All Activities and wildcamping sections of the kit list here. Walking poles are recommended for the final descent!
